Global (Commonwealth Union) – May is a significant month for individuals with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and their families, as it is recognized worldwide as EDS Awareness Month. The campaign EDS in May aims to raise awareness about this often misunderstood and underdiagnosed connective tissue disorder. By educating the public, healthcare professionals, and policymakers, we can foster a better understanding of EDS and support those living with the condition.

EDS encompasses a group of genetic disorders that affect the body’s connective tissues, which provide strength and elasticity to various structures, including the skin, joints, blood vessels, and organs. EDS can result from defects in the production, processing, or structure of collagen, a vital protein that contributes to the integrity of connective tissues. This condition affects people of all genders, races, and ethnic backgrounds.

EDS is often a misunderstood and misdiagnosed condition. Many individuals suffer for years prior to receiving an accurate diagnosis. EDS Awareness Month plays a vital role in dispelling misconceptions, improving early detection, and fostering a supportive environment for those living with EDS. By increasing awareness, we can promote timely diagnosis, appropriate medical management, and access to resources and support networks.

Living with EDS can present numerous challenges. Chronic pain, joint instability, fatigue, and other symptoms may impact a person’s ability to engage in daily activities, work, and social interactions. EDS Awareness Month offers an opportunity to highlight these challenges and advocate for improved accessibility, accommodations, and understanding within society. By acknowledging the struggles faced by individuals with EDS, we can foster a more inclusive and supportive community.

EDS Awareness Month serves as a platform to promote education among healthcare professionals, encouraging them to increase their knowledge about EDS and improve diagnostic accuracy. It also helps empower individuals with EDS to become their own advocates, offering them the tools and resources to navigate the complexities of the healthcare system and access appropriate care.
