The CEO of managed methods Charlie Sander says, a strong concentration on awareness to safeguard sensitive data and school cyber hygiene from ransomware attacks, insider errors and vendor vulnerabilities, has become a major threat in a landscape of an increasing digital education.

Concerning Microsoft statistics, within the last 30 days in the education sector, 6,110,425 new window enterprise malware encounters are opened. Cybersecurity threats are talked about a lot in the education sector; however, the figures indicate, it is worth repeating this alarming fact.

Education institutes are frequently targeted as the data can obtain a high value in the black marker by hackers and the ineffective cybersecurity procedures that exist in schools. For example, sensitive files that include personnel and identifiable information such as address, name, social security numbers, are sold in the black market to exploitative bidders, who may use this information to set up fraudulent loans.

Cybersecurity vulnerabilities seemed to have accelerated due to the remote learning required by the COVID – 19 pandemics, although this movement has given way to many positive changes, as increased flexibility. A wave of invasions through malware, social media attack and video conferencing hacks was experienced at the pandemic start. School administrators were vulnerable as they have to adapt to this new environment quickly.

Schools need to be more vigilant of cyber hygiene than ever before, as technology and the access to various devices are continuously expanding. Negligence or insider error, is one of the crucial treats that school districts face. Accidental sharing of sensitive information from someone with legitimate access to individuals that should not have access.

Recently the education sector became a main target for hackers for its valuable information with soft targets and efforts to restore their systems. Ransomware attack has increased dramatically on education. Schools have to spend a large amount on recovery costs. Recently the higher education spent $1.42M on rectifying ransomware attacks.

Vendor risk management treats are on the rise as more third – party tools are used for a variety of purposes in schools. These tools use the school’s network leaving a weak point in the cybersecurity structure, by connecting to the school’s network. These weaknesses give in to open authority vulnerabilities, as staff members and students accept app permission unknowingly as they download new applications.

Students must be educated by schools on the dangers of downloading unknown software, suspicious links, and using their home PCs to shire information within unknown sources. They should be educated to open emails and attachments from known sources only and exercise vigilance to avoid malicious sites when browsing the web. The use of robust passwords is crucial to ensure online account safety.
