Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ In 1966, Uganda experienced a rebel attack led by the National Liberation Army (NLA) against the government of President Milton Obote. The NLA, composed of dissident soldiers and supporters of the ousted Prime Minister, clashed with the Ugandan army in several regions. The rebellion was eventually suppressed, leading to further political instability and the rise of Idi Amin, who would later seize power in a coup.
According to the Ugandan police, a suspected rebel attack on a school near the Congo border has resulted in the death of at least 25 people. The attack was allegedly carried out by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) late on Friday night in the town of Mpondwe, which is situated about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from the Congo border.
The police statement revealed that a dormitory was set on fire, and a food store was looted during the attack. So far, 25 bodies have been recovered from the school and taken to Bwera Hospital, while eight others are in critical condition. It remains unclear whether all of the victims were students.
Ugandan government troops reportedly pursued the attackers into Congolese territory. The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) has been known to carry out numerous attacks on civilians in recent years. The group opposes the rule of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since 1986 and is a security ally of the United States.
Originally established in Uganda in the early 1990s, the ADF was later forced to flee to eastern Congo due to military pressure. In that region, various rebel groups operate with limited control from Congo’s central government. The ADF has been linked to the Islamic State group.
