It is common for the efficiency of some of our senses to decrease, such as taste, vision and hearing. Research indicates, as we age the rate of hearing loss increasers. It is estimated that 25 percent of individuals aged 65 to 74 and almost 50 percent of adults aged 75 and above have hearing loss disability.

Individuals can take precautionary steps to safeguard their hearing, although, age – related hearing loss cannot yet be completely eradicated. Avoiding loud noises and use of hearing protection in loud noise situations.

Research conducted at Fatty Acid Research Institute / Guelph and Tufts University indicated older and middle-aged adults with elevated levels of the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid where 8-20 percent are less likely to experience age – related hearing problems compared to individuals with lower DHA levels. This research is currently accessible at NUTRITION 2023, leading American Society for Nitration annual meeting.

An adjunct professor in the Department of Human Health & Nutritional Sciences at the University of Guelph and a senior scientist with the Fatty Acid Research Institute and the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, and lead author of this study Dr. Michael I. McBurney, informed medical news today that a decision is made to study the consequences of omega – 3s hearing problems as they were fascinated by finding trusted sources in animals, as the hearing development in offspring was compromised by maternal omega-3 consumption during pregnancy.

Cochlear metabolism in animals were pretentious by omega-3s. An inverse relationship with age-associated hearing loss in humans is experiences with a higher consumption of omega-3s and fish. These results prompted to explore the association between self – reported hearing loss and omega-3 levels in the UK Biobank cohort.

Lead author for the study Dr. Michael I. McBurney and his team utilized blood DHA levels of more than 100,000 people ages 40-69 from the UK Biobank and self – reported hearing status for the study.

Upon examination, to the question “Do you have difficulty hearing”, contributors in the higher quintile of blood DHA levels were 16 percent less likely to answer “yes”.

Dr. McBurney informed.  It has been theorized that they will experience a reverse association between age- and sex-adjusted hearing loss and plasma omega-3 concentrates

For those trying to gain possible omega-3 health benefits, are advised to consume foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, these foods include fish (mackerel or salmon), oysters, nuts and seeds (flex seed, chia seed, walnuts), soybeans.
