Pearnel Charles Jr Jamaica’s Labour and Social Minister, is to address in the Overseas Farm Work Program by visiting several North American farms. The visits are intended to gathering first-hand information of the condition in light of claims of Victimization following the current dismissal of five farm workers to Jamaica.

The Minister declared his decision during a Nationwide News Network (NNN) radio segment, ‘Ask the Minister’.

While Charles Jr recognizes that the participation is not unusual, however the reason for the visit can vary.

He informed, in regard to the individuals who were returned, from excess of 40 farmers, only 5 were returned from various different farms, and it is not uncommon for individuals to be turned back. If there is a change in the climatic conditions and for other unavoidable reasons, the farmer may have to return the individual without delay.

Charles Jr. together with senior ministry officials have attended discussions with the deported workers and various related parties. After negotiating with the farm management team, the relationship officer noted a reduction in the crop yields as the cause for the workers return.

The Liaison officer, in discussion and observation with the farm management team, informed that the individuals were returned due to a reduction in crop yield, which is a common occurrence. Instances where climate change and adverse weather affect the crop production or crop yield, the work on the field reduces leaving less work to be completed, in this situation few of the workers may be sent back. Although it is not confirmed as the reason. He informed.
