Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ President Emmerson Mnangagwa has come under criticism for appointing his son, David Kudakwashe Mnangagwa, as the deputy finance minister in his newly re-elected cabinet.

This decision has ignited concerns regarding nepotism within the government. David Mnangagwa, aged 34, will assume the role of deputy to Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube. Additionally, the president’s nephew, Tongai Mafidhi Mnangagwa, has been appointed deputy minister of tourism and hospitality. These appointments are part of the reshuffled cabinet, which now consists of 26 ministries, as reported by local media.

Fadzayi Mahere, a lawmaker representing the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has strongly criticized President Mnangagwa’s cabinet choices, describing them as “indefensible.” She has raised valid concerns about issues such as the cabinet’s legitimacy, corruption, violence, nepotism, incompetence, and ethical matters within the government.

Another eyebrow-raising move is the appointment of a husband and wife team, Christopher and Monica Mutsvangwa, as ministers. Christopher Mutsvangwa will lead the newly created Ministry of Veterans of Liberation, while Monica Mutsvangwa has been appointed as the minister of Women’s Affairs and SMEs.

David Mnangagwa, who recently obtained a law degree from the University of Zimbabwe, entered parliament through the youth quota system as a candidate on the Zanu PF party list from the Midlands province. He is one of President Mnangagwa’s approximately two dozen children. Tongai Mnangagwa currently serves as the Zanu PF Member of Parliament for the Hunyani constituency. His late father, David Mnangagwa, was the younger brother of President Mnangagwa.

There are also reports suggesting that President Mnangagwa is contemplating an official role within his office for another one of his sons, Emmerson Junior. Sources indicate that Emmerson Junior has already been involved in the president’s meetings with foreign investors, and there are plans to formalize his position, potentially as an adviser or director.

This controversy arises in the aftermath of President Mnangagwa’s re-election, which has been met with allegations of electoral irregularities from the opposition. Critics argue that these appointments contribute to a perception of dynastic politics in Africa, following the footsteps of other leaders who have placed family members in key government positions. Examples include President Denis Sassou-Nguesso of Congo-Brazzaville appointing his son Denis-Christel as a cabinet minister, President Teodoro Obiang of Equatorial Guinea having his son, Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, serve as vice president, President Ali Bongo Ondimba of Gabon succeeding his father Omar Bongo, and Rwandan President Paul Kagame appointing his daughter, Ange Kagame, to a significant role within his office.
