A Bristol sailor has been recognised for his bravery during a dramatic rescue mission, by King Charles. Chief Petty Officer Stephen Froom led the way to rescue five people aboard a stricken vessel in the English Channel.
The yacht, named Zapopan, was rapidly heading to waters southeast of St Catherine’s Point after being swept away by heavy seas and gale force winds. Fifty four year old engineer CPO Froom, worked against the perilous conditions while Zapopan drifted and rolled to extreme angles.
The 37 year old sailor was the first on the boat and the last off. He calmly worked to save the crew, including one who had been tossed into the water.
CPO Froom also worked with Lieutenant Commander Tom Leonard and Chief Petty Officer Giles Newbon to remove water and restart the boat’s engines, meaning that it could be saved. He received a King’s Commendation for Bravery, for his efforts, recognised in the latest Operational Honours issued by the MOD and approved by His Majesty alongside Seaman Specialist Alfie Hulme for his involvement in the rescue.
CPO Froom said he was initially embarrassed as he does not like the limelight. He said he felt proud and humbled to be recognised for something he perceived as just doing his job.
“I felt confident due to the training and experience I have. “ He said he viewed it as the job at hand, which he would be tasked with and needed to be completed. He went on to say that he was relieved that they were able to help the crewmembers and that they could stabilise and secure the vessel before handing it over to the RNLI.
