Bangladesh receives EU support for renewable energy

-

Bangladesh (Commonwealth Union)_ Bangladesh has entered into significant agreements with the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Commission (EC), paving the way for the country to receive a substantial financial injection of €477 million, comprising both loans and grants. These agreements encompass three key arrangements between Bangladesh, EIB, and EC, wherein €407 million will be extended to support the renewable energy sector in Bangladesh.

Additionally, Bangladesh will receive an extra €70 million in grant funding through five distinct agreements. Of this, €30 million will be allocated to technical and vocational training, while €10 million each will be dedicated to initiatives promoting decent work, e-governance, prevention of gender violence, and the advancement of green construction practices. The formal signing of these agreements took place in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, with the presence of Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, alongside EC President Ursula von der Leyen and EIB President Werner Hoyer.

The primary accord, titled “Bangladesh Renewable Energy Facility,” has been established between Bangladesh and EIB, securing an EU-backed framework loan of up to €350 million designed to bolster climate action investments within Bangladesh. The second agreement was signed between EIB and EC, involving an EU blending grant amounting to €45 million, comprising €6 million in technical assistance to ensure that all sub-projects adhere to international market standards and the environmental and social criteria established by EIB, along with an investment grant of €39 million. This substantial financial support is aimed at promoting concessional lending tools to bolster the initial renewable energy utility-scale projects in Bangladesh. The third agreement, known as the “Partnership for Green Energy Transition,” was established between Bangladesh and the European Commission, with a cost of €12 million, co-financed by Germany. This initiative aims to collaborate on policy development, legal frameworks, and the investment climate, all of which are intended to facilitate an inclusive transition towards green energy practices. Key officials present at the signing ceremony included Sharifa Khan, the Secretary of the Economic Relations Division; Markus Berndt, Deputy Managing Director of the EIB (GLO); and Koen Doens, Director General of International Partnerships at the EC. These agreements signal a substantial commitment to advancing Bangladesh’s renewable energy sector and related socio-economic development
