Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ In the race for London’s mayoral elections in May 2024, a new entrant has emerged in the form of Tarun Ghulati, a 63-year-old businessman and co-founder of the prestigious 21st Century Icon Awards in London. Ghulati, during a recent visit to India, his country of birth, officially announced his candidacy with a vision to become London’s first mayor of Indian origin. With two decades of residency in London, he expressed a strong commitment to preserving the city’s status as a global leader and ensuring the safety, security, and growth opportunities for all its residents.

One of Ghulati’s key focal points is addressing the needs of low- and middle-income households in London. He believes that more substantial efforts are required to uplift these sections of society, and he aims to introduce policies that resonate with voters who share similar concerns. In preparation for his challenge against the current Pakistani-origin Mayor Sadiq Khan, Ghulati emphasized his dedication to fostering increased cohesiveness between countries whose diaspora resides in London. He envisions building stronger people-to-people and business connections to enhance London’s global standing.

Ghulati’s mayoral platform includes a series of initiatives aimed at reshaping the city’s policies. Among these, he proposes the total removal of the Ultra-Low Emission Zone, no Congestion Charge on weekends and holidays, and a comprehensive review of the 20mph speed limit zones and Low Traffic Neighbourhoods. Additionally, he advocates for a visible policing presence across all boroughs, with a specific focus on reinstating police stations in areas with high crime rates. Affordable housing is highlighted as a key strategy, acknowledging the pressing need for accessible and secure housing options for London’s diverse population.

As Ghulati formally throws his hat into the mayoral ring, the upcoming elections in 2024 promise an interesting contest with potential shifts in London’s leadership landscape. His candidacy introduces a fresh perspective, combining a global mindset from his extensive international experience with a local focus on the specific needs of London’s residents, particularly those in economically challenged demographics. As the campaign unfolds, Ghulati aims to connect with voters who share his vision for a thriving, cohesive, and opportunity-rich London.
