India (Commonwealth Union)_ On International Women’s Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a significant announcement, slashing the price of LPG cylinders by Rs 100. In a post on a social media platform, PM Narendra Modi stated, “Today, on Women’s Day, our Government has decided to reduce LPG cylinder prices by Rs. 100. This will significantly ease the financial burden on millions of households across the country, especially benefiting our Nari Shakti.” He added, “By making cooking gas more affordable, we also aim to support the well-being of families and ensure a healthier environment. This is in line with our commitment to empowering women and ensuring ‘Ease of Living’ for them”.

PM Modi also conveyed his heartfelt wishes for International Women’s Day, celebrating the strength, courage, and resilience of women across various domains. He lauded their achievements while reaffirming the government’s commitment to women’s empowerment through initiatives spanning education, entrepreneurship, agriculture, and technology. This dedication, he noted, is evident in the government’s accomplishments over the past decade.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the central government has already provided 14.17 crore free LPG refills nationwide, underscoring its commitment to women’s welfare. Last year, ahead of Raksha Bandhan, the Union Cabinet had cut the price of a 14.2 kg LPG cooking gas cylinder by Rs 200, extending the benefit to PMUY beneficiaries as well. Previously, till August 2023, a 14.2kg LPG cylinder in the national capital cost Rs 1,103, but after the price cut, it decreased to Rs 903. For PMUY beneficiaries, the reduced price stood at Rs 703. Furthermore, in March 2023, the government extended a subsidy of Rs 200 per LPG cylinder under the PM Ujjwala scheme.

Additionally, a recent media report also delved into the shifting political landscape among women voters, attributing their support for Narendra Modi to the BJP’s focus on women’s welfare, including cash handouts and essential utilities like piped water, electricity, and cooking gas connections. Traditionally, Indian women leaned towards the Congress party, but Modi’s tenure has seen a change in allegiance, with increased support for the BJP-led alliance. According to polling agency C-voter, 46% of India’s 472 million female voters may choose the BJP-led alliance, compared to 43% of men, potentially securing a healthy majority in the upcoming elections. This shift underscores the evolving dynamics in Indian politics, with women’s support becoming a crucial factor in determining electoral outcomes.
