UK’s smoke-free generation

Europe, UK (Commonwealth Union) – The Tobacco and Vapes Bill aims to fulfill Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak’s pledge of forging a smoke-free generation, thereby safeguarding thousands of lives and saving billions for the NHS. Introduced to Parliament on March 20th, this legislation seeks to shield future generations throughout the UK from the detrimental effects of smoking, fostering a healthier future for our children.

According to a statement in the UK, smoking stands out as the primary preventable cause of death, burdening both the NHS and the economy with an estimated annual cost of £17 billion. Its addictive nature ensnares 4 out of 5 smokers before they reach 20 years old, keeping them hooked for life. This places immense strain on the healthcare system, with nearly one person admitted to an English hospital every minute due to smoking-related illnesses.

The Tobacco and Vapes Bill, introduced recently, proposes a crucial measure: prohibiting the sale of tobacco to anyone who turns 15 or younger this year, ensuring they never legally acquire tobacco. This initiative aims to shield future generations from the detrimental effects of smoking, potentially saving thousands of lives and billions in NHS expenses.

Notably, the initiative to cultivate a smoke-free generation holds promise for leveling up the UK, as smoking significantly contributes to health disparities, which are otherwise preventable.

It was emphasized however that while this bill does not criminalize smoking itself, it implements a phased approach to restrict tobacco sales to those currently legally eligible, preserving their access to tobacco products in the future.

The Prime Minister emphasized that in the quest to construct a brighter future for our children, addressing the foremost entirely preventable contributor to poor health, disability, and mortality is imperative: smoking.

“That is why, alongside new measures to curb the alarming rise in youth vaping, we are delivering on our commitment to create a smoke free generation and stop our kids from getting hooked on harmful cigarettes and other nicotine products”.
