Malaysia (Commonwealth Union)_ In Malaysia’s Pahang, a notable initiative is underway to address the issue of food waste during Ramadan, a significant period marked by Muslims worldwide. Accordingly, following the breaking of their fasts outside mosques, individuals put their leftover food scraps into a machine that converts these scraps into organic fertilizers for agricultural use. This initiative, spearheaded by the government in the central state of Pahang, aims to mitigate wastage, particularly during Ramadan when substantial quantities of food are discarded daily.

According to Sharudin Hamid, the state director of the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation, which launched the pilot project in 2023, the mobile machine that is stationed at a park in the bustling state capital, Kuantan, processes approximately 25 kilograms (55 pounds) of food scraps each day. Although this amount represents a fraction of the staggering 13,000 tonnes of food destined for landfills across the predominantly Muslim nation daily, Sharudin emphasizes its pivotal role in fostering awareness regarding food wastage and environmental conservation among the populace.

According to Sharudin, the primary goal of the initiative is to divert food waste away from landfills, a mission gradually gaining attention and fostering a deeper understanding of environmental stewardship, notably concerning the reduction of food wastage. The complex process involves the mixing of food waste with rice husk and sawdust over a span of 48 hours, resulting in a distinctive brownish-colored waste product that is packaged and disseminated among farmers as fertilizers for their agricultural use.
Recognized by locals as a constructive endeavor, the recycled food items not only nurture crops but also sustain a natural cycle wherein the resultant produce may, in turn, be composted into fertilizers, further underscoring the sustainability of the initiative. Additionally, individual testimonials further underscore the positive impact of this innovative approach. One resident, who now exclusively utilizes organic liquid fertilizers derived from recycled food waste on her urban plot near the city, attests to the significant enhancement in productivity.
Having transitioned away from costly chemical fertilizers in favor of natural alternatives since June of the previous year, she notes remarkable improvements in the size and vibrancy of her vegetable yields, attributing this success directly to the newfound fertilization method. This anecdotal evidence not only underscores the efficacy of the initiative but also highlights its potential to revolutionize agricultural practices, offering a sustainable solution to food waste management while concurrently bolstering agricultural productivity and environmental consciousness within communities.
