Earth and Habitat (Commonwealth Union) _Big Idea Ventures, an early-stage investor in agricultural and food technology, has unveiled its latest portfolio addition, PlantSustain, through its Generation Food Rural Partners (GFRP) fund. PlantSustain aims to revolutionize agriculture by harnessing groundbreaking biological innovation to replace chemical pesticides and fertilizers with natural solutions derived from endophytic bacteria and fungi.

By collaborating with leading research institutions, PlantSustain endeavors to bridge the gap between scientific breakthroughs and commercial application. The company will license intellectual property from universities to develop technologies that enhance crop health and nutrition while reducing reliance on harmful chemicals. Elsa Swanson Sareen, Vice President of the GFRP fund, expressed enthusiasm for PlantSustain’s mission to address sustainability challenges in agriculture.

Simon Hill, appointed as CEO of PlantSustain, brings extensive experience in global business development and technology commercialization to the role. Hill emphasized the growing demand for sustainable agricultural solutions and highlighted PlantSustain’s commitment to partnering with research institutions and distribution networks to drive innovation and market adoption.

The GFRP fund, supported by members of the Farm Credit System, focuses on identifying intellectual property innovations in agriculture, food, and protein sectors. With investments ranging from $1-5 million per project, GFRP aims to establish new companies centered around research with significant commercialization potential. These ventures will be based in rural communities, fostering economic growth and job creation.

Among the GFRP fund’s previous investments are DisSolves, a pioneer in biodegradable and edible packaging materials, TerraSafe Materials, specializing in sustainable packaging solutions, Nexture Bio, a provider of enabling technologies for cultivated meat production, and BioBond Adhesives, offering bio-based adhesive products for the food industry.

PlantSustain’s emergence underscores the pivotal role of biological innovation in promoting sustainable agriculture, aligning with broader efforts to address environmental and economic challenges in the food and farming sectors.
