New baggage rule for Schengen Countries

Starting from the 01st of September 2024, a new baggage rule will take effect for UAE residents and tourists flying to Schengen countries. This regulation, announced by the European Council, will reinstate the liquid limit of 100ml for hand luggage across several European Union (EU) airports. Here’s what you need to know about this temporary measure and how it will affect your travel plans.

The Change – What You Need to Know

Effective from September 1, travelers from the UAE heading to Schengen countries will face a maximum liquid limit of 100ml in their hand luggage. This rule applies to all liquid containers, including toiletries and beverages, which must fit within this size constraint. The decision, according to the European Council, is a precautionary measure in response to a temporary technical issue rather than a new security threat.

Why the Change?

The European Commission has introduced this temporary restriction as a response to technical adjustments related to Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage (EDSCB) used at some EU airports. These advanced systems previously allowed passengers to carry larger liquid containers, but with the new measures, the limit will revert to the standard 100ml at airports equipped with EDSCB technology. Airports not using this technology or already enforcing a 100ml limit will see no change.

Impact on EU Airports and Travelers

The new baggage rule will impact various EU airports that have implemented the EDSCB systems. However, the restriction does not affect airports that have not adopted this technology or those that already enforce the 100ml limit. For instance, Helsinki Airport, operated by Finland’s national carrier Finnair, will adhere to this new rule. Travelers will still be permitted to carry up to two liters of liquids overall, but individual containers must not exceed 100ml. Importantly, this rule does not affect transfer passengers at Helsinki Airport.

What This Means for UAE Residents

For UAE residents and tourists planning trips to the Schengen zone, it’s essential to prepare for this adjustment. Whether you’re traveling for business or leisure, ensure that any liquids in your hand luggage comply with the 100ml limit. This includes items like shampoo, lotions, and other toiletries that must be packed in containers no larger than 100ml each.

In addition to hand luggage, liquids in checked baggage remain unaffected by this change. However, it’s always wise to check specific airline policies and any additional guidelines provided by your carrier before traveling.

Why the Schengen Zone is Popular Among UAE Travelers

The Schengen zone, comprising numerous European countries, remains a favored destination for UAE residents. Whether for tourism, business, or visiting friends and family, the ease of travel within the zone makes it a popular choice. The influx of European nationals living and working in the UAE further highlights the strong ties between the UAE and Schengen countries.

Preparing for Your Trip

To ensure a smooth travel experience:

1. Review Airline Policies:  Check with your airline for any additional baggage restrictions or requirements.

2. Pack Wisely: Transfer larger quantities of liquids into 100ml containers and pack them in a clear, resealable plastic bag for easy inspection.

3. Stay Updated: Monitor any further announcements or changes related to the new baggage rule as your travel date approaches.

Looking Ahead

The European Commission is collaborating with member states and the European Civil Aviation Conference to address the technical issues leading to this temporary restriction. The goal is to develop swift solutions that maintain safety while minimizing inconvenience for travelers.

As this new baggage rule takes effect, being informed and prepared will help ensure a hassle-free journey to your Schengen destination. Safe travels!
