A Sickle is more than an instrument to only cut paddy!

Global (Commonwealth Union) – Each year on June 19th, World Sickle Cell Day is marked to raise awareness about sickle cell disease (SCD) and the challenges faced by individuals living with this inherited blood disorder. This global initiative aims to raise understanding, further early diagnosis, and advocate for enhanced treatment and support for those affected by SCD.

Sickle cell disease is a genetic blood disorder characterized by the presence of abnormal hemoglobin, the molecule responsible for carrying oxygen in red blood cells. Due to a genetic mutation, hemoglobin forms long, rigid strands within the red blood cells, causing them to adopt a sickle shape that appears as a c shape. These sickle-shaped cells are less flexible, prone to premature breakdown, and can obstruct blood flow, leading to various complications.

SCD primarily affects individuals of African, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Indian descent. It is estimated that roughly 300,000 infants are born with SCD every year, with a significant impact on their quality of life and overall health.

World Sickle Cell Day serves as a platform to raise awareness about sickle cell disease and highlight the urgent need for improved care and support for those affected. It aims to:

Promote Early Diagnosis: Early detection of sickle cell disease is crucial for implementing appropriate interventions and improving long-term outcomes. World Sickle Cell Day emphasizes the importance of newborn screening programs and encourages individuals at risk to undergo genetic testing.

Foster Support and Empowerment: The day seeks to provide a voice for individuals living with SCD and their families, creating a supportive community that offers understanding, resources, and solidarity.

Advocate for Improved Treatment: World Sickle Cell Day advocates for increased access to quality healthcare, improved pain management strategies, and advancements in research and treatment options for SCD.

Educate the Public: The day aims to educate the general public, dispel myths and misconceptions surrounding SCD, and promote a greater understanding of the challenges faced by those living with the condition.

Spreading awareness of the condition takes center stage for World Sickle Cell Day together raising funds for further research on the condition.
