Stratolaunch has publicized its primary “captive carry” test of its “Roc” airplane and Talon-A (TA-1) hypersonic vehicle. The flight was the twelfth for the “Roc” presentation platform and the primary in which the TA-1 was airborne with live propellant aboard.

This trial flight, Stratolaunch reports, is all part of the greater aim to initiate the Talon-A’s first mechanical flight.

The “Roc” is at present the world’s largest aircraft, with a wingspan of 385 feet (117 meters). The enormous, dual-fuselage aircraft last flew in May with a positive drop test with a Talon prototype. The Talon-A craft will be Stratolaunch’s primary hypersonic vehicle, with a Talon+ vehicle and space plane displayed on the company’s website.

Captive carry testing is a valued enhancement to wind tunnel testing. It permits the authentication of significant dynamic properties while providing substantial data about the flightworthiness of the trial vehicle, in this circumstance, the TA-1. By curtailing risk and failure probability, ground testing has played a critical role in the initial days of flight and remains to do so today.

During the flight, which continued for three hours and 22 minutes, the company accomplished a significant milestone in finalizing a powered flight with the Talon-A vehicle TA-1. The main objective of the flight was to assess the propulsion structure of Talon-A and the surroundings it operates in while carrying live propellants.

The secondary objective was to confirm the telemetry systems of “Roc” and TA-1, which offer situational awareness to confirm that all structures are prepared for powered flight during the release sequence.

Talon-A’s propulsion system contain a liquid-propellant rocket engine that offers the thrust required for Talon-A to reach hypersonic speeds. Although we have conducted numerous positive ground tests fueling and igniting the system, we require to assess how the system achieve in the flight situation prior to release, said Dr. Zachary Krevor, CEO for Stratolaunch.

He added that the Initial outcome from the flight display that the system has accomplished as projected, and we will determine our subsequent steps pending the full information review of the test.

It’s a stimulating time for our team and patrons as we grow closer to delivering our test service online. We’re moving quicker into the future of high-speed flight, and I’m pleased of our team’s firmness to reach this point, Krevor said.

As Stratolaunch reports, the TA-1 test Stratolaunch similarly made development on manufacturing TA-2 and TA-3 vehicles, the first completely reusable vehicles in the Talon-A product line. Apart from accomplishing this important test milestone, the company has also recently publicized two flight agreements with the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory and the Navy’s Multiservice Advanced Ability Test Bed (MACH-TB) program, where it will help as a subcontractor to Leidos/Dynetics.

Paul Allen started Stratolaunch in 2011 with the goal of air-launching rockets from high in Earth’s atmosphere, similarly to Virgin Galactic’s WhiteKnightTwo carrier plane and VSS Unity spaceliner. In 2019, a year subsequent to Allen’s death, Stratolaunch’s emphasis shifted from its former objectives. The company now intend to apply “Roc” as a platform for hypersonic study and expansion.
