The Opprtunity when Closed…

-

Australia finds itself presented with a unique billion-dollar prospect, as outlined in a recent report by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). The study, commissioned by the Cooperative Research Centre for Transformations in Mining Economies (CRC TiME), delves into the burgeoning opportunity for a new industry dedicated to supporting mine closures and transitions. With insights derived from mining industry databases and meticulous CSIRO analysis, the report projects an annual expenditure surpassing $4 billion on mine closure and rehabilitation activities, driven by the imminent closure of approximately 240 Australian mines by 2040.

As the mining landscape undergoes a significant transformation, there is an escalating demand for innovative solutions and technologies that not only guide mines toward closure but also address the diverse array of environmental, social, and economic challenges associated with such closures. The report, titled ‘Enabling Mine Closure and Transitions: Opportunities for Australian Industry,’ identifies this demand as a catalyst for economic growth, emphasizing the potential to generate employment opportunities for regional and Indigenous communities. Dominic Banfield, Senior Manager in CSIRO Futures and lead author of the report, underscores the pivotal role of mining in Australia’s economy. He highlights the industry’s contribution to jobs and the supply of essential minerals, aligning with the country’s energy transition and net-zero emissions goals by 2050. According to Banfield, with thousands of active and inactive mines in Australia, the need for mine closure solutions is poised to intensify, ensuring positive closures and facilitating the successful transition of regions to post-mining futures.

The report categorizes opportunities across four distinct domains of mine closure solutions: Engagement and partnership, Waste reduction and recovery, Mine rehabilitation, and Land use transitions. Dr. Guy Boggs, Chief Executive Officer of CRC TiME, underscores the additional social, economic, and environmental value that can stem from the development of a mine closure solutions industry. He believes that Australia has the potential to emerge as a global leader in pioneering mine closure solutions, leveraging its domestic mine challenge for international prominence in this cutting-edge sector.
