Advice to property developers in Kenya to spur affordable housing

Kimotho Kimani, the chief executive of Heri Homes noted that the use of such technologies are beginning to pick up momentum in Kenya, as they have already enabled developers to reduce construction time in local projects.

“Using these kinds of building methods, construction companies can build an eight-storey building in 8 months, down from 24 months they would take when using the brick and mortar method,” he said. “With such a technology, homeowners would get their houses faster than they would have ordinarily.”

Meanwhile, another industry experts is recommending an upscale in green solutions to reduce the burden of millions of Kenyans seeking affordable houses. Pointing to the recent findings of Kisumu-based Bola Properties, the company’s Managing Director Malei Nthiwa noted that despite the fact that affordable housing remains on the ongoing agenda of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, nine out of ten Kenyans lack a place they can call their homes. In its findings, the company listed lack of cost-effective building methods and limitations in end-to-end technical solutions as two of the most significant challenges.  Therefore, Nthiwa called for the up scaling of green solutions by property developers in the East African nation to mitigate these challenges.
