After many failed attempts, the Buhari administration is turning to professionals for support

 a similar request to professionals in the property industry, calling on them to draw up means and methods to meet needs of vulnerable people, who make up nearly 70 per cent of the country’s population.

“This challenge which has over the last six decades continued to evade sustainable solution must be tackled. But I can assure you that it is also one of the issues this administration is seriously determined to resolve,” he said during the opening of the National Housing Fair organised by the BSTAN Group on Monday (11 October). “Athough, there is no shortage of policies and programmes enacted by various governments to tackle this debacle, effective implementation remains the persistent problem.”

During his address, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo went on to commended the BSTAN Group for the role it has played in making homeownership a reality for millions of people in the West African nation.

The event was also attended by Nigerian architect and businesswoman Princess Fifi Ekanem Ejindu, who revealed that in order to bridging the housing gap in Nigeria, a total of 2 million housing units must be developed every year until the end of this decade.

According to Dr. Becky Olubukola, the Managing Director of BSTAN, the property developer plans to build about 100 affordable housing units in rural areas, and called on the government to tackle slums in the cities in order to ensure dwellers do not make the cities uninhabitable. She is also of the view that addressing the housing crisis would have a significant impact on Nigeria’s economy, as she said: “When you provide shelter for every member of the society, you have provided employment, food and businesses in those environment.”
