(Commonwealth_ India) In a strategic move aimed at repositioning itself as a global aviation leader, Air India has announced a substantial $400 million refurbishment initiative. This comprehensive program will modernize 67 of its older aircraft, with the first phase targeting 27 narrow-body Airbus A320neo planes. The refurbishment will subsequently extend to 40 wide-body Boeing aircraft, reflecting Air India’s commitment to elevating its service standards and competitive edge in the international aviation market.
The refurbishment program has officially commenced with the overhaul of the narrow-body A320neo aircraft, beginning with VT-EXN, which entered the maintenance hangar on Monday. Following regulatory approvals and prototyping, this aircraft is anticipated to re-enter commercial service by December 2024. It will join a fleet of eight newly delivered A320neo aircraft already equipped with upgraded interiors. The airline has outlined an ambitious plan to retrofit three to four aircraft per month. The enhancement of the narrow-body fleet is scheduled for completion by mid-2025. Following this, Air India will initiate a comprehensive upgrade of its wide-body Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft, with refurbishment efforts set to commence in early 2025.
Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Air India, emphasized the significance of this milestone: “The commencement of the interior refit of our narrow-body fleet is a pivotal step in our mission to enhance our customers’ flying experience. This upgrade is a crucial element of Air India’s broader transformation into a world-class airline.” The refurbishment will introduce a new three-cabin layout on the A320neo aircraft: Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy. The Business Class will feature eight 40-inch seats with adjustable armrests, reclining capabilities, and integrated charging ports. Premium Economy will offer 24 seats with 32-inch legroom, while the Economy Class will present 132 ergonomically designed seats with improved legroom.
Passengers will benefit from an array of upgraded amenities, including contemporary lighting, USB Type A and C ports for device charging, and new carpets and upholstery that reflect Air India’s revamped design ethos. Over 15,000 new-generation seats will be installed across the three classes to significantly enhance the in-flight experience. The wide-body Boeing aircraft will also undergo premium upgrades, incorporating high-quality seating and cutting-edge inflight entertainment systems. The designs for these enhancements have been finalized, and Air India is collaborating with manufacturers to accelerate the production process.
The timing of this substantial refurbishment aligns with Air India’s broader strategic objectives, including an expansion of its international operations amidst intense global competition. The increase in disposable incomes in India has led to a growing demand for premium travel options, making this investment both timely and strategic.
Additionally, the refurbishment coincides with the forthcoming merger between Air India and Vistara, another Tata Group airline. The merger, which has recently received approval from the Indian government, will be finalized by the end of 2024. This consolidation is expected to position Air India as a more formidable player in the aviation sector, strengthening its market position and enhancing its service offerings. Through these significant upgrades, Air India is poised to redefine passenger expectations and set new benchmarks in the global airline industry.
