All Flights cancelled…

-

All tourists who have booked to go to Skiathos, in Greece, should check with their airline as Jet2 and Jet2Holidays have cancelled all bookings until 12th September due to deadly floods.

Brits who have booked holidays with Jet2 or Jet2Holidays to Skiathos, in Greece, may no longer be able to travel abroad.  All flights and holidays to the Greek island have been by the holiday company until next week due to the severe weather affecting the hotspot.

Skiathos, off the Aegean Sea, has been battered by dangerous floods.  Tourists have been stranded with several people dead. Hundreds of Brits are presently stuck on the island due to the torrential rain and flash floods.

Police have ordered all residents and tourists to stay away from the streets while the island’s mayor has put in a request to declare a state of emergency. Homes and businesses owned by locals have been damaged by the floods and power cuts are also hitting the usually sunny island.

Jet2.com Limited is a British low-cost leisure airline that offers scheduled and charter flights from the UK. As of 2022, it is the third-largest scheduled airline in the United Kingdom, behind easyJet and British Airways. Jet2 is also officially the largest tour operator in the United Kingdom after overtaking TUI in 2023.

UK-bound flights from a Greek Island have been cancelled as severe rainstorms and widespread flooding continues to batter the region.

Traffic has been banned on the resort island of Skiathos by Police as record rainfall caused at least one death, channelled thigh-high torrents through streets and swept cars away.

Storm Daniel is causing severe flooding across the region, with streams overflowing their banks and cars being swept into the sea.

British tourists have taken to social media to request for help having been left stranded on Skiathos, which is east of the Greek mainland.

Jet2 PLC said all its flights due to depart the island on Tuesday and Wednesday being five in total have been cancelled.  The airline said it was monitoring the forecast and would confirm new departure times as soon as possible.

Four flights that were scheduled from the United Kingdom to the Island on Wednesday have also been cancelled.

A flight from London Stansted to Skiathos was diverted on Monday, to the mainland city of Thessaloniki because of the weather, where customers were provided with hotel accommodation until they can be returned to the UK.

Holidaymakers told MailOnline that they were lucky to be up high at the Skiathos Palace, Koukounaries.  Some guests had been asked to check out of their rooms.  They said food supplies were running out at the hotel and no more could be supplied as the road by the hotel had collapsed.  The rain had been heavy for around 36 hours while the hotel was homing local families who lost theirs on the beach, they said.

Elsewhere in Greece, police had banned traffic in the central town of Volos and the nearby mountain region of Pilion with Five people reported missing, possibly swept away by floodwater.

Streams overflowed their banks and swept cars into the sea in the Pilion area, while rockfalls blocked roads, a small bridge was carried away and many areas suffered power cuts.

The storm comes on the heels of major summer wildfires that hit Greece over the past few weeks, with some burning for more than a fortnight and destroying vast tracts of forest and farmland where over 20 people were killed in the fires.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis blamed both the wildfires and storms on climate change  On Tuesday he said “I am afraid that the careless summers, as we knew them … will cease to exist and from now on the coming summers are likely to be ever more difficult.”
