All-time great LeBron James to serve as Team USA’s flag bearer

Global (Commonwealth) _ Basketball icon LeBron James will be the flag bearer for Team USA at the Paris Olympics, it was confirmed yesterday in front of a big crowd of other Team USA Olympians. According to Team USA, the opening ceremony will feature around 350 athletes (out of 592 that will attend the Games).

LeBron James, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, expressed gratitude to Team USA for selecting him as the men’s flagbearer for the 2024 Opening Ceremony in Paris.

Stephen Curry, a four-time NBA champion and USA basketball teammate, gave the news to James before their 92-88 triumph against Germany on July 22. “You get to wave the flag in Paris, my man,” Curry told James, as their other USA teammates applauded.

“It’s special to have the opportunity to represent your country in a different way,” the NBA’s all-time leading scorer told Team USA. I realize how significant this moment is, and the opportunity to be the flag bearer and wave the flag not only for us as the men’s national team, but for all Olympians, fills me with pride.

On July 26, LeBron James will become Team USA’s first men’s basketball player to walk the Olympic Opening Ceremony as flagbearer. My family, community, and friends will undoubtedly [help] keep it alive indefinitely. I’m quite grateful and humbled by it,” he stated.

Since his first Olympic Games in 2004, where he won bronze, LeBron has justifiably acquired the label of ‘King James’, and is widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest basketball players.

The 39-year-old has been awarded NBA Most Valuable Player four times and an All-Star a record twenty times. There is little mistake as to why James was picked to wear the Stars and Stripes for the United States, having influenced millions of individuals across the country and around the world on and off the court.

From supporting the local community of Akron, Ohio through the LeBron James Family Foundation and speaking out against injustice, to becoming the first Black man to grace the cover of Vogue and actively promoting a number of global non-profit organizations, James has clearly used his celebrity to good.

Despite professing a desire to continue playing into his forties, Paris 2024 will most likely be James’ final Olympics, providing him one final chance to win a third gold medal. James will take center stage in a one-of-a-kind ceremony with a female flag bearer, who will be unveiled on Tuesday.

The Opening Ceremony will take place along the Seine River, marking the first time it has not been conducted inside a stadium. The Parade of Nations, which normally shows national delegations of athletes walking into the Olympic Stadium, will take place on the water, with boats transporting the 10,500 participants through the city’s center.

The event begins at 1:30 p.m. ET on July 26 and will be aired throughout the world simultaneously. “Sports have the capacity to bring us all together, and I’m proud to be a part of this important moment.”

LeBron Raymone James Sr., sometimes known as “King James,” is widely regarded as one of the best players in the sport’s history and is frequently compared to Michael Jordan in disputes over who is the greatest basketball player ever. James has been in ten NBA Finals (including eight straight from 2011 to 2018), earning four titles. He also won the inaugural NBA Cup with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2023, as well as two Olympic gold medals with the United States men’s team.

The Los Angeles Lakers great is the first male basketball player to carry the American flag, joining Dawn Staley (2004) and Sue Bird (2020). This year’s opening ceremony will be the largest in the event’s history, with over 300,000 fans anticipated to applaud as athletes participate in the Parade of Nations.

For the first time, the opening ceremony will take place on boats along the 3.7-mile Seine River route, rather than in a stadium. The American delegation will be aboard the second-to-last boat in the Parade of Nations, as the United States will host the next Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.

The female flag bearer for the US is expected to be announced on Tuesday.
