Canada is considered the preferred destination for international students, according to a future study conducted by IDP Education. This is mainly due to the opportunity to acquire work experience after graduation.

Over 25% selected Canada as their preferred choice for international study, out of four well-known destination countries, (Canada, The United States, United Kingdom, and Australia), indicated by a survey.

From 20,000 participants in the survey, 63% globally, indicated post–study work is an influencing and main element in where they choose to study, and 72% have decided after graduation, will apply for a work visa.

Post-study work visa was a major concern for 61% of the students planning to study in Canada and increased to 63% for students from Nigeria, 58% for students from Ghana, and 75% for students from Vietnam, the survey indicated.

The survey figures show that the students consider Canada as an affordable, Safe, and welcoming place to study, and a good opportunity for work after graduation, as reported by Christine Wach, Director of client partnership of North America of IDP Connect.

Studies also reveal 43% were considering part–time opportunities while studying, 61% of their choice depends on high–quality education, while 53% of students noted that employment opportunities available after graduation as a vital factor when the destination is selected.

Without obtaining a work permit, 20 hours a week are allowed to work, for international students throughout the academic year. During winter and summer holidays, they are allowed to work full–time, provided they study full–time the following semester. It is indicated that 81% of respondents were planning to work part–time or already working during their studies.

As a way to acquire experience in Canada, students are offered the opportunity to apply for a post–graduation work permit (PGWP), for graduating international students. This experience can be utilized towards acquiring status as a permanent resident and eventually, if so desired, Canadian citizenship.

Canada has worked hard to place itself at the top of the list for post–secondary education, hosting over 800,000 international students. It is beneficial to retain graduates in Canada, after completing their studies, for the economy and labor force, as the number of job vacancies is high due to the country’s aging population.
