Sydney (Commonwealth union)_ Australians enjoy having pets, and the dog is still overwhelmingly our best friend for the majority of us.
The 17,000 Australians who are surveyed each year by the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey are asked about their pets for the first time. It demonstrates that nearly two-thirds of us own at least one animal.
Patterns of pet ownership can aid academics in their investigation of who is more likely to own a pet and the relationship between pet ownership and wellness as indicated by life satisfaction, mental health, and physical health. The findings demonstrate that a significant percentage of Australians—nearly 62%—own at least one pet.
Although this percentage is lower than stated rates in Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico, it is greater than the United Kingdom’s reported rate of 41% and comparable to the United States’ (65%).
The majority of people who keep pets are dog owners. 48 percent of all Australians, or over 72% of those who own pets, have dogs. Cats were the second-most common pet after dogs, with 37% of pet owners having a cat.
Fish, at 18%, are the next most common pet, followed by birds, at 16%. Horse ownership is represented by 3.6% of pet owners, and other pet ownership is represented by 17%.
Since a person may own more than one kind of pet, it should be highlighted that these categories are not mutually exclusive, according to Dr. Botha.
However, he adds, “We do know that roughly 59% of pet owners have only one type of pet, whereas 24% have two types of pets, and 17% have three or more pet varieties.
The researchers also examined the differences in personality traits between those who keep dogs and people who don’t. According to Dr. Botha, the results “probably have a lot to do with life stage.” “It’s possible that older folks are less likely to desire to have an active dog as a pet.”
