Bangladesh honored with Local Climate Leadership Award at COP28

Bangladesh (Commonwealth Union)_ Bangladesh has clinched the prestigious Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) Locally Led Adaptation (LLA) Championship Award for Innovation in Developing Finance at COP28, the ongoing climate conference in Dubai, UAE. This notable achievement is attributed to the Local Government Initiative on Climate Change (LoGIC) Project, a collaborative effort spearheaded by the Local Government Division and backed by the European Union, Sweden, Denmark, the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The award ceremony, held at the Resilience Hub, served as a platform to recognize Bangladesh’s outstanding contributions to local adaptation and resilience building. Introduced in 2022, the GCA LLA Champions Awards recognize creative, commendable, and scalable locally-led projects that address the adverse effects of climate change, with a particular emphasis on supporting vulnerable groups facing environmental challenges. Dr Farhina Ahmed, Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Climate Change, received the award on behalf of the Local Government Division, Ministry of Local Government Rural Development, and Cooperatives of Bangladesh.

The LoGIC Project has had a transformative impact, benefiting nearly 2 million people across nine climate-vulnerable districts in Bangladesh. Over 400,000 households have been empowered to better prepare for the impacts of climate change, enabling them to invest in climate-resilient livelihoods, diversify income sources, and access markets and financing to improve adaptive practices. 

Stefan Liller, the UNDP Bangladesh Resident Representative, highlighted the award as a testament to Bangladesh’s unwavering commitment to locally-led adaptation and resilience. The recognition underscores the dedication of the Local Government Division and its development partners, showcasing the power of innovation in addressing climate challenges. According to him, UNDP reaffirms its commitment to supporting transformative initiatives that empower communities and contribute to a sustainable and resilient future.  

Stefan Liller stated, “The recognition of the Local Government Initiative on Climate Change (LoGIC) Project reflects Bangladesh’s steadfast commitment to locally-led adaptation and resilience. This award acknowledges the dedication of the Local Government Division and its development partners and exemplifies the power of innovation in addressing climate challenges. UNDP remains committed to supporting transformative initiatives that empower communities and contribute to a sustainable and resilient future.”  

Bangladesh’s recognition comes specifically in the category of innovation in developing finance, reflecting the innovative approach taken by the country in addressing climate-related financial challenges. Beyond celebrating the accomplishments of the winners, the GCA Awards draw attention to the collective efforts aimed at addressing climate change at the local level. Overall, these initiatives play a crucial role in building resilience and adapting to the effects of climate change, demonstrating the spirit of collaboration and innovation essential for a sustainable future.
