Bangladesh PM launches world’s largest housing project for the homeless

Dhaka, Bangladesh (CU)_ Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, launched a new housing project to provide homes for the homeless population in the country. This project is considered as one of the world’s largest housing projects. During the inauguration of the Ashrayan-2 Project, Hasina made the announcement. Due to coronavirus constraints, the ceremony was virtual, and the PM inaugurated the project from the Gana Bhabanan, her official residence.

The Ashrayan-2 housing project is part of the government’s commitment to provide houses to all homeless on the day of Mujib Borsho, which is the 100th birthday of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh. Bangladesh is also celebrating the golden jubilee of its independence.

The Prime Minister stated, “No one will remain shelterless in the Mujib Borsho and the golden jubilee year of Bangladesh’s independence. Our resources may be limited, but I’ll provide at least one address to every person in the country.”

The PM believes that her late mother, father and others who have sacrificed their lives for the nation will be at peace if the homeless population in Bangladesh are given houses through the new initiative. The PM said, “Millions of martyrs who had made supreme sacrifice for the country will get peace. The only aim of the Father of the Nation, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was to change the fate of the people of the country.”

The PM expressed pride over the new housing program that is providing homes to about 70,000 homeless families. She said it is a proud moment for the country. She added, “This is the biggest festival ever for the country, as we’re giving homes to the homeless people.” The PM also expressed glad over the housing project. She said, “I’m very happy that we’ve been able to give addresses to the people, especially in the winter season.”

The Ashrayan-2 project would help about 885,000 homeless population in Bangladesh. Houses are now ready to be provided for more than 66,000 families. The total cost of the project is approximately Tk 11.5 billion (£ 99 million). The officials said that an additional 100,000 houses will be ready by February 2021. Each home of the housing project has two rooms, one kitchen, one toilet and a veranda. The construction cost each house is Tk 175,000 (£1,500).
