Brexit: EU and UK will go that ‘ Extra Mile’

London, UK (CWBN)_ The United Kingdom and the European Union have announced yesterday (13th Dec) that Brexit trade negotiations will carry on past the self-imposed deadline, despite the lack of compromise between the two parties thus far.

In a joint statement issued on Suday, President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen and PM Boris Johnson stated that it is “responsible at this point to go the extra mile”.

Von der Leyen noted that she had a “constructive and useful phone call” with PM Boris Johnson and had discussed “major unresolved topics”. The details of the conversation were not divulged.

“We have accordingly mandated our negotiators to continue the talks, and to see whether an agreement can be reached, even at this late stage.” she said.

The EU Chief added that, “Our negotiation teams have been working day and night over the recent days, and despite the exhaustion after almost one year of negotiations — and despite the fact that deadlines have been missed over and over — we both think that it is responsible, at this point in time, to go the extra mile,”

Meanwhile, Johnson maintained that the likelihood of a “no-dead Brexit” are high.

Negotiations for a trade deal have been going on since March this year, however, negotiations have continued to stall on account of the three points on interest, fishing rights, maintenance of a fair, competitive market, and the regulation of the deal.

However, if a deal is not struck by the official deadline, the 31st of December, trade regulations between the UK and bloc would revert to that of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
