UK (Commonwealth Union)_ Indian children are making their presence felt on the international chess stage, and Bodhana Sivanandan is one of the brightest young names to emerge in recent years. The 11-year-old British Tamil chess player has already made history with a remarkable rise that has attracted attention in both Britain and India. Bodhana became the youngest woman to receive the Woman Grandmaster (WGM) title after securing her final norm at the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Representing England, she played all 11 rounds on the team’s top board, a position normally given to its strongest player, and finished the competition with eight points.

The achievement marked another major step in a journey that began almost by accident during the Covid-19 pandemic. When Bodhana was five, a family friend left a chessboard at her home. Intrigued by the pieces, she began learning their movements with help from her father, online tutorials and YouTube videos. What started as curiosity soon developed into a serious passion. Her progress was remarkably fast. In 2021, she played her first tournament at Harrow Chess Club. A year later, at just seven, she won all 24 of her games at the European Schools Chess Championship. Her performances continued to improve as she competed against increasingly strong opponents.

Bodhana’s achievement in Samarkand was significant beyond the WGM title. She also earned another International Master (IM) norm, bringing her closer to the open International Master title. Unlike the WGM title, the IM title is open to players of any gender and requires three norms as well as a rating of at least 2400. Her record-breaking WGM achievement also ended a mark that had stood for around two decades. Before Bodhana, Kateryna Lagno had been the youngest woman to earn the title at 12. China’s Hou Yifan, meanwhile, remains the youngest woman to become an open Grandmaster, achieving that title at 14. Despite her growing reputation, Bodhana remains a primary school student in Harrow, north-west London. Her school has provided flexibility to allow her to travel for international competitions.

Bodhana’s family has roots in Tiruchirappalli, India, with her parents having moved to Britain in 2007. She has made it clear that she does not want to stop with the records she has already achieved. Her larger ambition is to become an open Grandmaster, the highest title in chess. Her rise is being closely followed by the wider chess community, while her success has also become a source of pride for people with Indian and Tamil roots. For Indian families watching young players make their mark around the world, Bodhana’s story is a reminder of how quickly talent can develop when curiosity is supported by opportunity, hard work and consistent competition. At only 11, she has already made history. Her next chapters could be even more significant.
