Brunei (Commonwealth Union)_ According to the statement from BDCB, the Brunei Darussalam Central Bank’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU, BDCB) and the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Singapore. This agreement involves cooperation in exchanging financial intelligence to investigate and prosecute individuals suspected of money laundering or financing terrorism.

Prior to the MoU signing, FIU, BDCB, and AUSTRAC have already had successful collaborations on various projects such as analyst hubbing programs and capacity-building initiatives. The recent MoU is seen as another significant milestone in their ongoing partnership. This latest MoU is the eighth agreement signed by the FIU, BDCB. Among these agreements are those between the Financial Intelligence Units of Malaysia, Indonesia, South Korea, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Singapore, Laos, and the Philippines.

The MoU signing with other Financial Intelligence Units is in compliance with the Principles of Information Exchange of the Egmont Group, which is a global organization of international Financial Intelligence Units. This agreement also demonstrates the two countries’ commitment to comply with international standards on anti-money laundering and the fight against the financing of terrorism, especially the Financial Action Task Force, Recommendation 29. In general, the FIU, BDCB, and AUSTRAC serve as central agencies in Australia and Brunei for receiving, requesting, analyzing, and disseminating financial intelligence and additional details relating to money laundering and terrorism financing.
