Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ Former President Muhammadu Buhari has called on All Progressives Congress (APC) governors to embrace a leadership style rooted in humility, service, and people-centered governance. Speaking during a courtesy visit by members of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) to his residence in Kaduna, Buhari emphasized that true leadership lies in prioritizing the public good over personal interests.
According to a statement released by his media aide, Garba Shehu, the visit formed part of the governors’ Eid-el-Fitr celebration tour. Buhari reflected on his time in office, asserting that he left the presidency with the same personal assets he entered with and expressed contentment in his legacy of service. “Leadership is not about self-it’s about the people,” he said. “That is why we serve.”
The former president commended the APC governors for their work across the states and urged them to stay focused on initiatives that improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians. He also expressed gratitude to the administration of President Bola Tinubu for renovating his Kaduna residence. “The house may look the same outside, but the internal improvements are deeply appreciated,” Buhari remarked.
He acknowledged both familiar and new faces among the PGF members and lauded the continuity in engagement between party leaders.
Speaking on behalf of the governors, PGF Chairman and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma praised Buhari’s statesmanship and his lasting impact on Nigerian politics. He highlighted Buhari’s historic victory over an incumbent president in 2015 and commended him for governing with integrity and peacefully handing over power in 2023.
Uzodimma also recognized the former president’s legacy in security, infrastructure, agriculture, and anti-corruption. Initiatives like the Anchor Borrowers Program, rail and road development, and the conditional cash transfer scheme were cited as examples of people-first policies introduced under Buhari’s administration.
He applauded Buhari for his public support of President Tinubu, describing it as a gesture that promotes party unity and continuity in governance. Uzodimma urged the former leader to continue offering guidance to the APC and to play an advisory role in the party’s journey toward democratic deepening and national progress.
“In you, we find enduring values and inspiration,” Uzodimma concluded. “We ask you to remain a guiding light for our party and its leadership.
