Can Malta’s Carnival Go Ahead as Extreme Winds Disrupt Transport Plans?

Strong winds compelled buses out of the Valletta ditch to create space for Carnival floats. Some commuters may opt to board buses along Floriana granaries.

Strong winds predicted for the end of the week have compelled the authorities to temporarily relocate part of the Valletta bus terminus to the Floriana granaries to protect carnival floats.

This year, the carnival floats are expected to be parked at the Foss ta’San Gakbu, whilst some commuters will board route buses along the granaries.

The Met Office is forecasting force 7 to 8 west-northwesterly winds between Thursday 12 & Friday 13 February.

On Friday 13 February, the wind is forecast to change direction to southwest and decrease to force 4.

The wind is forecast to remain within the force 4 to 5 range on Saturday, 14 February, with an increase expected again to force 6 & 7 on Sunday, 15 February, until Tuesday, 17 February. However, a change in wind direction is also expected to the west-northwest.

According to Windfinder, wind gusts are expected to peak at 52 knots at around 0100 hrs on Friday, 13 February.

Meantime, Carnival activities are being held between Friday, 13 February, and Tuesday, 17 February.

Festivals Malta, Transport Malta and the Malta Public Transport and Carnival enthusiasts said in a joint statement that throughout this period, until 18:00hrs on Tuesday, 17 February, several route buses are expected to be temporarily relocated to the granaries area in Floriana.

 

Zone B buses will be relocated to Triq San Publiju.
