Canada’s PM Trudeau will attend the virtual G20 summit being hosted by India

-

Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead a virtual G20 summit attended by leaders like Russian President Vladimir Putin and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This encounter marks the first virtual meeting between Modi and Trudeau since the strained relations between India and Canada following Trudeau’s September allegations of potential Indian involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Nijjar in British Columbia.

India refuted Trudeau’s accusations, deeming them “absurd” and “motivated.” The summit will also include Russian President Vladimir Putin, confirmed by the Kremlin, and Chinese Premier Li Qiang, according to an announcement from China. This event coincides with Israel’s Cabinet approving a temporary ceasefire with Hamas, offering a respite in the six-week conflict.

The ceasefire involves a four-day halt to Israel’s military offensive in Gaza while Hamas releases at least 50 hostages among the 240 held. Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 Sherpa, anticipates “excellent participation” from leaders in the deliberations, emphasizing the meeting’s rarity and significance. This marks Modi’s second interaction with world leaders during India’s G20 Presidency before it transitions to Brazil in December.

The G20 summit follows an extraordinary meeting of BRICS leaders addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Kant highlighted the virtual summit’s goal: addressing global governance gaps, reaffirming commitments to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and progressing toward a revitalized multilateral system.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra expects a large majority of G20 leaders to participate, although predicting if geopolitical tensions will arise remains uncertain. The meeting’s economic aspects are expected to provide momentum and guidance for the finance track, preparing for Brazil’s G20 presidency starting December 1.

While the summit covers various issues, attention is drawn to discussions on the Gaza situation. Israel’s extensive military operation in Gaza, prompted by Hamas attacks on Israeli cities, has garnered criticism for civilian casualties. The conflict has claimed around 1,400 lives in Israel and led to over 11,500 deaths in Gaza. The G20 leaders’ virtual summit aims to foster cooperation on critical challenges, emphasizing development and addressing emerging global issues.
