Ceylon Tea Takes Center Stage in Brussels’ Exquisite Promotional Extravaganza

Brussels, Belgium – The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Belgium orchestrated a groundbreaking event, titled “A Journey of Flavour and Aroma from Sri Lanka to Belgium,” on October 18 at the Press Club Brussels, marking the inaugural Ceylon tea promotion and tasting affair.

In collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tea Board and the Export Development Board, the event was meticulously crafted to spotlight the unparalleled quality and rich aroma of Ceylon tea within the Belgian landscape.

With an impressive turnout of over 80 participants, including Belgian tea importers, brokers, international tasters, and industry experts, the event also drew in journalists, media personnel, social media influencers, and bloggers.

Ambassador Grace Asirwatham underscored the 150-year legacy of Ceylon tea, emphasizing the distinct flavors derived from hand-picked tea leaves cultivated in diverse Sri Lankan climates. She applauded the high-quality production of Ceylon tea, achieved through ethical labor practices and sustainable agriculture. Sri Lanka’s prominent role as the primary exporter of orthodox black tea to the EU, valued at Euro 79 million under EU GSP Plus, was acknowledged for its positive societal impact.

Emphasizing Sri Lanka’s dedication to sustainability, global best practices, and collaborations with conservation organizations, Ambassador Asirwatham highlighted Ceylon tea’s certifications, including Fair Trade, Ethical Tea Partnership, Rainforest Alliance, and various organic certifications, showcasing its commitment to eco-friendly production practices.

Brussels’ tea expert Cinzia Merlin shared insights into how Ceylon tea acts as a catalyst for cross-border unity. Panel discussions with representatives from renowned Ceylon tea brands delved into the quality of Ceylon tea and their contributions to social empowerment and environmental protection.

The participants were treated to a distinctive tea-tasting experience, featuring products from top Ceylon tea brands. The event not only celebrated the excellence of Ceylon tea but also underscored its pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s economy and its significant contribution to global tea culture.
