The Mystery of Edwin Drood appeared in the process of the writer’s work in the year 1870. Initially, it was planned to publish the work throughout the next year with the help of monthly parts, starting in April, but the writer had a stroke and died on June 9, 1870, having completed only six portions of the book. The edition of 1870 contains an official letter from the publisher saying that the novel finishes after the sixth part and the ending remains unknown forever. Â Because it cuts off right as the tension peaks, calling it merely an “unfinished novel” understates the literary enigma it became.
The first scene of the novel presents a waking dream. John Jasper wakes up in a drug-induced fog in a filthy room, together with a Chinaman, a Lascar, and an opium-addicted woman. From this unsettling start, Dickens creates a realm of constant overlapping between reality, obsession, and hallucination. Jasper is immediately intriguing, because his public persona as a respected musician comes into sharp contrast to the dark thoughts hidden behind his mask of calmness.
Then we have Cloisterham, the fictional cathedral town at the centre of the plot, which Dickens depicts as old, stagnant, and almost literally imprisoning. The streets of Cloisterham belong to another age, and the townspeople regard any change as something disturbing. It is an ideal location for a mystery where hidden motives are as important as open actions.
The last work of Charles Dickens, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, has become one of the most significant mysteries in literature. The book deals with a complex fictional world where characters like Edwin Drood, Rosa Bud, John Jasper, and Neville Landless live. Ultimately, the work is unforgettable not because the mystery was solved, but because of the author’s sudden death. Charles Dickens died on June 9, 1870. The sixth and final completed instalment was published posthumously, dated September 1870 (the fifth instalment was published in August). Over a century later, the ultimate mystery remains: how exactly Dickens intended to conclude this brilliant psychological masterpiece.
