AMMAN, JORDAN — 29 OCTOBER 2026
How quickly can a common trip turn into a dangerous struggle to survive? In Jordan, an unanticipated flood transformed an ordinary car ride into a family disaster, resulting in the deaths of a 37-year-old woman and her 27-year-old niece when their car was swept off a bridge and carried more than a hundred metres into the valley.
This story happened near the Sayagha Bridge in Madaba Governorate on the evening of 27 October 2026 when the car was on its way to Madaba. According to local media reports, the rain was not severe at first, but it eventually turned into a flood. The car fell into the valley because the mountain waters were stronger.
The driver, who was the older woman’s brother and the younger woman’s uncle, jumped out of the vehicle and managed to reach a nearby stone, where he was later rescued by civil defence and local residents. Unfortunately, the two women did not make it.
A Desperate Search Among the Mud and Debris
The disaster initiated an extensive rescue operation involving the civil defence and police teams in Jordan. Rescuers searched flood channels and surrounding areas. They had to wade through mud, trees, and debris carried down the valley by the flood.
Jordanian authorities reported on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, that they had retrieved the bodies of both women. The Jordanian News Agency Petra reported that civil defence and police rescue services found the second victim during the rescue operation in the Madaba Region.
Besides the tragedy in its direct sense, the situation raises numerous questions concerning the background of the victims. The 37-year-old woman was a mother of four little children, one of whom was an 18-month-old baby. Her 27-year-old niece was a university graduate who worked as a teacher in the supplementary education programme in Jordan.
When Rain Turns Dangerous
The horrible incident has brought to light the threats posed by the occurrence of flash floods, in which fast-rising waters can make previously safe roadways, bridges, and drainage systems extremely dangerous. The floods can hide the road itself, destabilize the crossing points, and sweep away cars with great power.
On 28 October, 2026, Jordan’s Directorate for Public Security warned the inhabitants of the country against visiting valleys, flood-affected areas, and low-lying spots, warning drivers against passing when the road is covered with water. They called upon the population to abide by the advice of meteorologists and to dial 911 in the event of danger.
The tragedy that happened in Madaba reminds everyone that roads that seem secure can become impossible to cross in a blink of an eye. When the weather is unstable, avoiding getting stuck in a flooded area is not simply important; it can mean avoiding the death of loved ones.
