Commonwealth Secretary-General explores Sir Arthur Cotton Museum and barrage at Dowleswaram

UK (Commonwealth Union)_ The Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, embarked on a visit this week to the Sir Arthur Cotton Museum and barrage located across the Godavari River at Dowleswaram in East Godavari district. The museum serves as a comprehensive guide to understanding the intricate Godavari delta system, providing visitors with insight into the transformative journey that altered the destiny of the Godavari delta.

Ms. Patricia Scotland expressed her delight in discovering the significant contributions made by the British Engineer Sir Arthur Cotton to the Godavari region. Upon her arrival, she received a warm welcome from N Tej Bharat, the Joint Collector of East Godavari District; A Chaitra Varshini, Rajahmundry Revenue Divisional Officer; and other dignitaries. Patricia Scotland described her visit to the historic Cotton Museum as a special and enriching experience.

During the visit, East Godavari Joint Collector N. Tej Bharat, Revenue Divisional Officer A. Chaitravarshini, and irrigation engineers provided detailed insights into the Godavari delta system and the pivotal role played by the Sir Arthur Cotton barrage in the region’s economy in Andhra Pradesh. Tej Bharat elucidated the shape and remarkable construction system of the Cotton Barrage, and a sample from the catchment area of the Godavari River was examined. Subsequently, Water Resources Department SEG Srinivasa Rao and DE Kashi Visveswara Rao shared intricate details about the life of Cotton Dora and the historical background of the Cotton Barrage.

Notable figures present during the visit included Chief of Staff at the Commonwealth Secretariat, Deborah Michelle Gracey; Special Representative of the SDG Implementation Office, Prajapati Trivedi; Executive Director of the USA Garwood Center for Corporate Innovation, Prof. Solomon Darwin; Sushil Chand Ram from the Central Youth Department at the Commonwealth Secretariat; Chairman of Godavari Institute of Engineering Technology (GIET), KV Satyanarayana Raju; Vice-Chairman K Sashi Kiran Verma; Tahsildar P Chinna Rao; and others.
