Could This Railway Project Open a New Era for Uganda?

Uganda is considering a new railway plan that could change how it exports its natural resources. The government is thinking about connecting its planned railway to another line that is being built in neighboring Tanzania. If this plan goes ahead, Uganda would have a new route to export its minerals to other countries. This could enable the country to ship gold, copper, iron ore, and other valuable resources more easily and more efficiently.

Currently, most of Uganda’s goods are shipped through Kenya, mainly via the busy Port of Mombasa. Uganda has already announced plans to connect its Standard Gauge Railway to Kenya’s railway system, which is still being developed. However, this new idea shows a shift in focus: Uganda is now seriously considering building a direct rail connection to Tanzania’s network, giving it access to the Port of Dar es Salaam.

According to a document from Uganda’s Ministry of Works and Transport, the proposed railway would begin at the Tanzanian border. It would run through southern and southwestern Uganda and end at Mpondwe, a town on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The main purpose of the line is to link mineral-rich areas in Uganda and Tanzania directly to the port of Dar es Salaam.

Officials believe this could reduce transport time and cut shipping costs. Having another export corridor would help Uganda lower its dependence on Kenya’s Mombasa port. Relying on a single main route can be risky if there are delays, congestion, political tensions, or other disruptions; a second pathway would provide more security and flexibility for trade.

Funding for the railway is still under review. The African Development Bank is studying a request to finance early preparation work. Bank officials say they may support the full project if research shows it is financially sound and practical.

If completed, the railway could reshape trade across East Africa and strengthen economic ties throughout the region.
