Health authorities are taking proactive measures ahead of the holiday season in response to the identification of two fresh waves of Covid-19 infections in two Australian states. A recent outbreak in a Northern Territory aged care facility has further heightened concerns, with increasing cases reported in New South Wales and Western Australia.

Although the public health emergency related to Covid-19 is considered resolved, medical experts emphasize that the pandemic remains a significant issue. Widespread vaccination efforts have mitigated the individual impact of the illness, but this success has led to a potential complacency among the public.

South Australia and Queensland have emerged as epicenters of the latest outbreaks, with Queensland being approximately four weeks into its current wave. Chief Health Officer John Gerrard, addressing the media, stated that he would not recommend a return to mask mandates, deeming such a response as “disproportionate” to the current level of risk.

Despite the ongoing waves, the Australian Medical Association Queensland branch president, Maria Boulton, expressed concern for vulnerable community members. Over 220 individuals have been hospitalized with Covid in Queensland, prompting a call for eligible individuals to receive a vaccine booster for added protection.

Dr. Boulton highlighted the challenge of accurately assessing Covid prevalence due to reduced testing as vaccinated individuals experience milder illness. She urged the public not to underestimate the virus’s persistence, emphasizing that Australia is now facing its eighth wave.

In South Australia, health authorities anticipate a potential rise in hospitalizations, emphasizing the need for preventative measures. Chief Health Officer Nicola Spurrier recommended booster doses for elderly residents in aged care facilities.

Despite the absence of mask mandates, health authorities across states and territories encourage vulnerable populations to receive booster shots. Individuals are urged to comply with mask-wearing requests in medical facilities and show respect for healthcare workers. Those feeling unwell are advised to stay home, get tested for Covid, and eligible individuals are encouraged to start oral antivirals upon displaying symptoms for maximum effectiveness.

As Australians prepare for the holiday season, adherence to these preventive measures is crucial to curb the spread of Covid-19 and ensure a safe and healthy festive period.
