Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande Lead Wicked’s Magical Golden Globe Run

Jon M. Chu’s musical blockbuster Wicked continues its magical run, securing four prestigious Golden Globe nominations ahead of the 2025 awards season. The Universal Pictures hit, based on the beloved Broadway musical, has captivated audiences and critics alike since its Thanksgiving weekend release on November 22, 2024.

The film earned a nod for Best Picture, Musical, or Comedy, positioning itself as a strong contender amid tough competition. Wicked’s dazzling performances, enchanting visuals, and emotional storytelling have turned the musical adaptation into a cinematic and cultural phenomenon.

Leading the film’s awards charge are stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, whose portrayals of Elphaba and Glinda have won critical acclaim. Erivo received a nomination for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Musical or Comedy, cementing her reputation as one of the industry’s most dynamic talents. The industry has hailed Erivo’s fierce, emotionally complex portrayal of Elphaba, the misunderstood “Wicked Witch of the West,” as both commanding and vulnerable, earning her widespread respect.

Meanwhile, Grande’s sparkling turn as Glinda, the bubbly and ambitious “Good Witch,” earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Female Actor in Any Motion Picture. Grande’s transformation into the beloved character impressed audiences and critics, with her performance showcasing not only her powerful vocals but also her comedic timing and emotional depth.

The chemistry between Erivo and Grande has been a key highlight of the film, adding new layers of complexity to the characters’ evolving friendship. Both stars have expressed their gratitude for the recognition, with Erivo calling her nomination a “dream come true” and Grande thanking fans for their unwavering support.

Beyond its acting nominations, Wicked also scored a nomination for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, a category introduced last year and first awarded to Barbie, the 2023 box office sensation. With a record-breaking opening of $114 million domestically, Wicked set a new benchmark for musical adaptations, demonstrating that the genre still resonates deeply with modern audiences.

Despite its strong presence in key categories, Wicked was notably absent from the directing and writing nominations. Despite adapting a beloved stage musical into a visually stunning and emotionally resonant film, Chu and screenwriters Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox did not receive any nominations. Some industry insiders expressed surprise, though the film’s four overall nominations still highlight its cultural impact.

While Wicked’s soundtrack debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, it was ineligible for Golden Globe music categories because it exclusively features songs from the original musical. However, director Jon M. Chu hinted that the forthcoming sequel, Wicked: Part Two, set for release in November 2025, will include two new songs written by the original composer and lyricist, Stephen Schwartz.

Although Chu remained tight-lipped about the tracks, he described them as “fantastic” and promised that they would enhance the film’s emotional and narrative arcs. Schwartz’s return, along with Holzman’s involvement in adapting her stage book for the screen, has strengthened the film’s ties to its Broadway roots.

Adding to Wicked’s nostalgic appeal are cameos from Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who originated the roles of Elphaba and Glinda on Broadway. Their brief but memorable appearances delighted long-time fans and linked the new film to its theatrical legacy.

The Golden Globes, despite facing past controversies, remain a crucial indicator of awards season momentum. With stars like Angelina Jolie, Hugh Grant, Timothée Chalamet, Kate Winslet, and Selena Gomez also vying for major honors, Wicked’s multiple nominations solidify its status as a formidable awards contender.

The film’s recognition also raises expectations for next year’s Academy Awards, where Wicked could emerge as a major player. Its blend of star power, musical grandeur, and heartfelt storytelling makes it a favorite among voters and fans alike.

As the countdown to the Golden Globes continues, Wicked’s cast, crew, and legions of fans have much to celebrate. With Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande leading the way, the film’s spellbinding journey from Broadway to the big screen seems destined for even greater awards-season success.
