Europe UK (Commonwealth Union) – Unpaid carers are individuals who provide assistance and support to family members or friends with various care needs, without receiving any monetary compensation for their efforts. They take on multiple roles, acting as companions, advocates, and caregivers. Their responsibilities can include personal care, such as bathing, feeding, and administering medication, as well as emotional support, financial management, and household tasks. These carers often face immense physical, emotional, and financial challenges, yet their dedication remains unwavering.

Valuing unpaid carers both in England and Wales presently has an estimation of £162 billion. This goes beyond the complete NHS budget in England for health service spending, when contrasted was £156 billion for 2020-21.

After analyzing the most recent 2021 Census data, a recent study from the University of Sheffield and carers’ charity, Carers UK, had noted that the value of unpaid care has risen by almost a third since 2011.

Millions of individuals giving unpaid care for a family member, friend or neighbor impacted by long-term illness, disability, or those requiring further assistance and help as they grow older. Most individuals will face the requirement for care, or end up as an unpaid carer during their lifetime.

They regularly care around their own commitments like employment and family life. The unpaid carers are often provided with little backing or recognition for the large savings they make to the health and social care system of the UK each year.

Professor Matt Bennett, Deputy Director for the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) Centre for Care at the University of Sheffield, says “Our research shows that people are providing more hours of care than ever before, and their contribution to the UK economy now exceeds that of the entire NHS budget in England. There are estimated to be around 5 million unpaid carers in the UK, and it is obvious that they need to be recognised, not just for their contribution to society, but in their need for specific rights and support for the work that they do.”
