Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) and the Nigeria in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) have announced a collaborative effort to promote the career advancement of women within both organizations. This partnership was established during this year’s Women’s Day celebration at NEITI House in Abuja.

Mrs. Obiageli Onuorah, Deputy Director/Head of Communications & Stakeholders Management, disclosed that the Executive Secretary of NEITI, Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, and the Chairman of NiDCOM, Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, reached an agreement on this partnership. The inter-agency cooperation aims to address challenges hindering women’s career advancement in public service, including capacity building programs and socio-economic development challenges.

Dr. Orji emphasized the significance of Women’s Day as an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the valuable contributions of women to national development, particularly in the extractive industries. He advocated for equity, inclusivity, and gender justice, highlighting the need for greater opportunities for women in job roles, career advancement, and ensuring a secure work environment.

Dr. Orji highlighted the global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) standards, which emphasize promoting diversity in decision-making and disclosing information on women’s participation and gender-related issues in the extractive industries. He noted that NEITI’s industry reports have shown discouraging statistics regarding women’s participation in the sector, with employment data revealing a significant gender disparity.

To address this issue, Dr. Orji announced the establishment of a Gender and Environmental Unit within NEITI, dedicated to promoting women’s inclusion in extractives governance and reporting on gender distribution in the sector.

Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, as the special Guest of Honour, urged career women in public service to prioritize self-confidence, education, skills development, integrity, and professionalism. She emphasized the importance of family and advised against the “Japa syndrome,” encouraging those considering migration to seek adequate information and guidance.

The inter-agency cooperation aims to mobilize professional Nigerian career women from diaspora communities to contribute to national development. The Women’s Day celebration at NEITI House was attended by high-profile women from various sectors, who delivered inspiring speeches.
