In many developing nations the progress and the sustainable development goals (SDGS) and universal health coverage targets has declined due to Covid 19 pandemic and the present global downturn.

According to the world bank, there will be a 176 billion US dollar annual gap in healthcare budgets for the worlds 54 poorest nations, in 2030. There is a shortfall in the funding needed to provide quality and affordable services to the population. For many countries the recovery is quite slow.

The world bank has made it clear that most of the developing countries will fail to achieve their goals for health and poverty related SDGS and universal health coverage, to strengthen their health finance, urgent steps have to be taken. This was said by the secretary general at a roundtable meeting.

“So, we must work together with urgency, and with sustained commitment to get progress towards universal health coverage and the SDG’s back on track”

Secretary -general also said the impact of covid 19 on universal health systems that everyone will be safe only after complete Eradication. Many countries were off track on the SDG’s even before the covid 19 pandemic. As a result, the targets are designed to improve standards of care.

The main priority of the commonwealth ministers and commonwealth secretarial is to tackle the financial gap, this was said at the last meeting in May 2022.

35th commonwealth health ministers meeting will be held in May 2023 under the theme:

“Getting UHC in the commonwealth on track by 2030”

The commonwealth secretary – general will be working with commonwealth finance ministers and officials at the IMF-world bank spring meeting, in order to strengthen their access to investment.
