The opening of classes for basic education is fast approaching, and both teachers and parents are busy preparing and planning for the children’s first day of school.

With the current upsetting state of our educational system, all shareholders in education must be responsible to do their part in lowering the extremely high percentage of our country’s learning poverty.  Despite some resistance by assuming teaching responsibilities, we still trust that parents have the best productivity possibilities to help the Department of Education in its monumental duty. Parents, categorically are capable to support teachers in increasing the development of our children’s learning potential. After all, they are not only their children’s first but should be their lifetime teachers.

During this period of information technology, children who flourish are those who become independent learners at an early age and have learned to master life-long learning skills. They become skillful too, by learning these soft skills which is essential presently, at workplaces.

But before learning these skills, there are prerequisite skills that parents should encourage to develop or teach their children. two of these prerequisites are curiosity and autonomy, which can be taught and developed simultaneously, at home or in the classroom. As we please children’s curiosity, they gradually learn to answer their own questions and become independent thinkers. When we give them more freedom to explore, they widen their views, which makes their curiosity to grow and learning a never-ending process.

Children are very curious about everything which comes to their mind. That is because they want to understand the world around them. Parents and other adults in the family must recognize that, curiosity is a skill which should be satisfied and encouraged, if they want their children to cultivate a love for learning.

Since education is a joint responsibility to home and school, parents can think many ways which they can do to support their children’s learning, from the simple daily conversations, they can do activities together, either for education gains or pleasure. With the abundance and nonstop growth of technological resources, there is never an end to what a parent and child can do together in the practice of life-long learning. Certainly, there is no reason for learning deficiency to happen in any country, if only adults love their children and care enough for their future.
