Welsh Government launches… children

-

Europe UK (Commonwealth Union) – A fresh initiative is prompting parents to prioritize their children’s eye examinations at local optician stores during this summer season.

The “Help Us Help You” campaign in optometry has been crafted to benefit the entire populace of Wales, with a particular emphasis on children, encouraging them to undergo eye assessments as a proactive measure against potential future complications.

Research indicates that approximately 20% of school-age children harbor undetected vision issues. Consistent eye health examinations, catering to both adults and children, have the potential to avert or identify various eye ailments such as glaucoma, diabetes, and myopia at an earlier stage.

Eye problems can often lead to difficulty in carrying out school activities, which can often remain unnoticed for years, hence an accurate assessment of the health of the eyes is key for those of all ages.

Optometrists, who specialize in eye care, possess the expertise to assess children’s visual acuity and identify an array of eye-related problems and disorders in their initial stages, enabling effective treatment. The National Health Service (NHS) will furnish eyeglasses without charge for children requiring them to enhance their vision, along with complimentary eye care treatments.

Given the escalating demand for eye care services, the Welsh Government is revolutionizing the provision of eye care across Wales. This includes an innovative optometry contract that empowers high-street optometrists to handle, monitor, and treat an expanded range of eye conditions. This shift ensures a larger segment of the population gains access to free eye care and treatments promptly and within their vicinity. Furthermore, this approach promises to enhance outcomes while alleviating some of the burdens on general practitioner (GP) practices and hospitals.

“We recommend everyone visits their local opticians for regular preventative eye health checks. The younger you are when you start having eye tests the better, which is why I would encourage all parents and carers to get their child’s eyes tested this summer ahead of the new school year. Optometrists are experts in eye health,” added Minister for Health and Social Services Eluned Morgan.
