UK (Commonwealth Union)_ Leeds-based hotel specialist Silverstone Building Consultancy will project manage the construction of the United Kingdom’s first Passivhaus hotel.
Chartered building surveyor Silverstone Building Consultancy has been appointed to overlook the construction of what could be the first Passivhaus hotel in the United Kingdom.
The development will involve demolition of an existing 20-bed hotel and building a new 1,795 sq m facility, subject to planning approval. It will feature an expanded restaurant and bar on the ground floor.
‘Passivhaus’ is a type of housing designed to maintain the ideal atmospheric conditions inside achieving between 70% and 90% energy savings in comparison to a conventional house.
Developer Octopi Property appointed the firm to deliver plans to build the 20-bed luxury coastal hotel at Runswick Bay, close to Whitby in North Yorkshire. The Cliffemount hotel project will involve demolishing an existing twenty-bed hotel. Construction is due to begin in late Spring 2024, subject to planning consent.
Associate director at Silverstone Building Consultancy, Josh Brown, said they were looking forward to getting started – hopefully starting on site by the end of Q1 next year.
Melissa Tomlinson, Octopi property director said they wanted to limit the impact the development has on the environment and the local community which is one of main reasons we chose to aim for Passivhaus status.
She said that Silverstone fully understand what they were trying to achieve and were highly experienced in delivering new hotels so they were an obvious choice as project managers and they are confident the project was in safe hands.
Architecture firm Bowman Riley has designed it.
Buildings must follow strict energy-efficient design standards to achieve the Passivhaus international energy performance standard.
In 2022, Hotel Marcel became the first Passivhaus hotel to open in the United States of America.
In the event planning approval is granted, construction of the hotel is being planned for late Spring 2024.
