FIJI – CU – The Ministry of Education is recruiting teachers to fill vacancies after 493 teachers exited the ministry for a number of reasons, including resignation, retirement, death and termination.

In a statement, the ministry revealed some positions were being filled through the redeployment of surplus teachers. It stated the remaining vacant positions would be filled by recruiting new teachers.

“Teachers must have teacher training qualifications which must include the practicum component. All recruitment will be carried out in accordance with the Open Merit Recruitment Selection process,” the ministry stated.

The ministry was recruiting teachers for Early Childhood Education, special/inclusive education, primary and secondary to fill the current vacant posts and create a pool of teachers to fill vacancies that may arise during the year.

The ministry stated for secondary schools, teachers were needed in industrial arts, mathematics, physics, home economics, computing and PEMAC.

It stated that for secondary teachers, there was no immediate vacancy to fill in other subject areas.

“These subjects are biology, chemistry, accounting, Economics, Agriculture, English, geography, history, Hindi, Vosa vakaviti and Urdu. The pool will be valid for 12 months to fill positions. The ministry is aware of the fact that each year, over 700 pre-service teachers graduate from the various teacher training institutions. However, the ministry is not able to absorb all these graduates within that year. The recruitment process includes qualification checks, written job tests and interviews. Once the applicant meets the minimum qualification requirement, then he or she is called for a job test. If applicants pass the job tests based on the threshold, then they are contacted for the interviews.”

Graduates and teachers could apply online using the ministry’s online portal.
