First post-blockade food aid ship leaves Ukraine for Africa

a “special military operation.” Ukraine refers to it as a conquest-style imperial war.

Hundreds of thousands of tonnes of Ukrainian grain might now be sent to buyers after three Black Sea ports were unlocked last month as part of an agreement between Moscow and Kyiv mediated by the United Nations and Turkey.

According to the infrastructure ministry of Ukraine, the Brave Commander headed for the port of Djibouti on the Horn of Africa with 23,000 tonnes of wheat for consumers in Ethiopia.

In a statement, it was stated that “The ministry and the UN are working on measures to improve food supplies for the socially vulnerable sectors of the African population.”

The opening of ports on the Black Sea, whose waters have long been held by Russia, is the most crucial step in reducing hunger worldwide, according to World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director David Beasley.

“It will take more than grain ships out of Ukraine to stop world hunger, but with Ukrainian grain back on global markets we have a chance to stop this global food crisis from spiralling even further,” he said in a statement.

According to Marianne Ward, the WFP’s deputy emergency coordinator in Ukraine, the ship is anticipated to arrive in two weeks and the organization has already acquired 60,000 metric tonnes of wheat.

She added that WFP was considering all methods for transferring food out of Ukraine and that further cargoes were likely to send food aid to nations in the Middle East and the Horn of Africa region.

“While we totally focused on the Odesa ports because that is most efficient and can get out the most tonnage, we are still pursuing taking commodities out through alternative routes.”

According to the WFP, despite recent advancements, the global food crisis continues to be unparalleled, with up to 50 million people in 45 countries on the verge of famine.
