The birth of the new date-harvest season, since this event is related to so many important aspects, including cultural background and agricultural diversity in the UAE has startled everyone and shed light on one of the most significant agricultural products of all time. A significant number of facts show that there are around 150 types of dates grown in the UAE, which differ by ripening time and planting date. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment believes that the date harvest must not be treated only as a harvest season since this event is related to so many important aspects, including cultural background and agricultural diversity.

Among the best-known and widely grown varieties we have are Fard, Barhi, Khalas, Sukkari, Khanezi, Sultana, Shishi, Zamli, and Abu Maan. All these varieties have their own identities; Khalas is renowned for its sweetness and yellow colour, whereas Fard is mainly associated with the Al Ain region and has a cylindrical shape and dark brown colour. Abu Maan is said to be the high-quality variety that is fit for the dry climate, whereas Khanezi is grown on a large scale in the Liwa Oasis region. According to the ministry, Dabbas is another variety from the Liwa area of Al Dhafra and is one of the major varieties grown in the UAE, along with Lulu, which is known for its oval shape and sweet taste. Among other varieties grown in the UAE are Naghal, Hilali, Khasab, Hassawi, and Nabtat Saif.

Apart from acknowledging the fruit only, the message from the ministry also highlighted the importance of the scientific aspect of maintaining the date palm trees. In its agricultural research stations, it generates and provides the farmers with about 50 kg of date palm pollen each year for the purposes of improving their yield. Moreover, the UAE makes constant efforts to secure the date palm trees from various pests and diseases, the biggest of which is the red palm weevil that destroys many palm varieties, including the date palms.

In a country where agriculture is challenged by the weather conditions, such as heat and water shortage, the date harvest season serves as the best example of resilience. Through its combination of traditional practices and modern technology, the date industry in the UAE not only produces the fruits but also contributes to preserving the cultural heritage of the country.
