Ghana concludes protests against rising living costs and the “moral decay” of leaders!

-

Ghana (Commonwealth Union) _ Protesters in Accra, Ghana, recently concluded a three-day #Occupy Julorbi House campaign, voicing their demands for political change and economic reform. These demonstrators, amidst unpredictable weather conditions, expressed their frustrations with the current state of affairs, holding placards bearing messages such as “Ghana deserves better” and “We are tired of being voting machines.”

Initially, the protesters intended to reach the Golden Jubilee House, Ghana’s government seat, but they encountered police resistance. The police initially responded forcefully, leading to the arrest of more than 50 individuals, including journalists, on September 21. This clash with law enforcement underscored the challenges faced by the protesters in their bid to make their voices heard.

Political activist Bernard Mornah issued a strong warning, emphasizing their preference for peaceful change but making it clear that they wouldn’t hesitate to turn to violence if pushed too far. This protest movement traces its origins back to the “Fix the Country” campaign of 2021, marked by demands for government accountability and enhancements in various facets of life in Ghana. It underscores the ongoing push for change and reform in the country.

Organizers of the movement remain resolute in their mission. Democracy Hub’s convener, Oliver Barker Vormawor, assured supporters that prosperity and liberty would be the ultimate rewards at the end of their journey. He emphasized the importance of reclaiming Ghana’s essence and altering the country’s trajectory, which he described as a path marked by moral decline.

The protest took place while President Nana Akufo-Addo was attending the UN General Assembly in New York. This highlights the movement’s commitment to conveying its message and its vision for a better Ghana on an international platform, underscoring the significance and urgency of their cause.
