The statistics presented for the year 2024 were brought up in 2026, as the present is the most recent year for which complete global organic market data is available.

According to a very recent report by the World of Organic Agriculture, released by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) and IFOAM, Organics International, the global organic food and drink market reached sales of €145.0 billion in the year 2024. The latest figures were brought out into the open on 10 February 2026 at BIOFACH, which is the world’s premier organic trade fair held in Nuremberg.

The €145 billion in retail sales is €6.9 billion higher than in the year 2023, showing that demand for organic products is still growing in major markets around the world. Experts say that continued consumer interest in health, quality, and sustainability is the main reason for this growth.

Remaining as the largest organic market globally, the United States has an organic retail which totalled up to €60.4 billion in 2024, which strongly shows how the country is dominating this sector. Following them, Germany, with approximately €17 billion in sales, and China, with €15.5 billion, position themselves as the second and third top markets in the world.

Switzerland has emerged as the leader in terms of organic consumption per person. Spending an average of over €481 on organic products per person in 2024, Swiss consumers had made sure that organic goods accounted for 12.3% of total food sales, which is the highest market share globally. These numbers show us how deeply organic products have taken over the Swiss market when being compared with the rest of the regions.

On the production side, organic farmland worldwide remained close to 99 million hectares in 2024, showing stability in the global organic production base. This broad area reflects continuity in farm engagement despite challenges in scaling up organic agriculture quickly. Australia led with the largest organic agricultural area at 53 million hectares, and Liechtenstein had the highest share of organic farmland as a percentage of its total agricultural land at 43.5 per cent. Across the globe, the number of organic producers reached 4.8 million, illustrating the sector’s wide geographic footprint.

The report also shows what strength they have when it comes to international trade in organic products, along with the combined organic imports which are made into the EU and also the United States, which reach about 5.9 million metric tonnes in total in 2024, which is up 12.3% year on year.  As the largest exporters in these markets, Mexico, Ecuador and Canada take centre stage, which shows us how supply chains are connected and strong.

Analysts in the industry believe that this excellent performance is very likely to encourage even further investment and new beginnings throughout the organic food sector. While day by day, more consumers end up buying safer, natural and more environmentally grown ingredients and foods, the demand for these organic products is expected to skyrocket and remain strong. In the meantime, the efforts taken to enlarge the organic farmland and also the supply chains will be the main challenges as well as opportunities in the years ahead.

Offering a very detailed report regarding organic farming, the 2026 edition of The World of Organic Agriculture also covers details on retail sales, farming, production, and even global trade. It gives us a clear view of the sector as well as how agriculture, which is done organically, is continuing to grow each day as an important part of the global food economy.
